Still Runs Wild

The Landscape

Three Ecosystems,
One Island

Sea turtle nesting beaches. Mountain peaks where snow lingers into May. Gorges where endemic orchids bloom in silence. Cyprus holds three distinct worlds within an island you can drive across in two hours — and each one feels like stepping into a different country entirely.

01 — Coast

The Coast

Dramatic cliffs plunging into turquoise water. Sea caves carved by millennia of waves. Beaches where loggerhead turtles return every summer to nest. The Mediterranean at its most untamed.

03 — Wilderness

Akamas Peninsula

The wild west of Cyprus. Roadless wilderness, protected national park. Endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. This is Cyprus before tourism, before roads — 230 square kilometres of untouched landscape just thirty minutes from your room.

The Mountains

Troodos range rising to nearly 2,000 metres. Pine and cedar forests where light filters through in columns. Mountain villages where time moves at a different pace. Cool refuge when coastal heat becomes too much to bear.

The Trails

Four Walks That
Change Perspective

01

Aphrodite Trail

Moderate7.5 km3–4 hours

Dramatic coastal cliffs, sea caves, wildflowers in spring. The trail where legend says Aphrodite bathed — and where you'll understand why she chose this coast over any other.

02

Avakas Gorge

Moderate–Challenging3 km2–3 hours

Narrow canyon with walls reaching 30 metres high. A stream running through limestone. Endemic plants clinging to rock faces in defiance of gravity and logic.

03

Troodos Summit Trail

Easy2.5 km1 hour

At 1,952 metres, the highest point in Cyprus. Mountain air sharp enough to taste. Pine forests, then bare rock, then views across the entire island and beyond.

04

Akamas Coast Path

Easy–Moderate12 km4–5 hours

Rugged coastline, hidden beaches accessible only by foot. Blue Lagoon swimming stop halfway. Wild, remote, and completely free of anything resembling a resort.

The Inhabitants

Wildlife You
Might Encounter

Cyprus sits on the migration route between Europe and Africa. Combined with its endemic mountain species and protected marine life, the island holds surprises for anyone willing to look.

Sea Turtles

June – August

Loggerhead turtles nest on Lara and Toxeftra beaches. Strict protection rules apply — observe from a respectful distance as ancient ritual unfolds on sand.

Cyprus Mouflon

Year-round

Endemic wild sheep found only here. Shy but occasionally spotted in Troodos mountains at dawn, moving through pine forests like ghosts.

Migratory Birds

Spring & Autumn

Eleonora's falcons, bee-eaters, hoopoes pass through. The endemic Cyprus warbler stays year-round — small, fierce, found nowhere else.

Wildflowers

March – May

52 species of orchid. Anemones, cyclamen, wild tulips. The Akamas Peninsula transforms into a carpet that would make any garden seem modest.

The Calendar

Nature by Season

Mar – May

Spring

Peak wildflower season

Waterfalls flowing. Pleasant hiking temperatures. Bird migration spectacle. The island blooms in ways that feel almost theatrical.

Wildflowers, hiking, photography

Jun – Aug

Summer

Sea turtle nesting

Coastal hikes best done at dawn. Mountain trails offer cool refuge above the heat. The sea is warm enough to swim in until midnight.

Beach-to-trail combos, turtle watching

Sep – Nov

Autumn

Perfect temperatures

Ideal hiking conditions return. Grape harvest in mountain vineyards. Fungi foraging season begins in earnest under the pines.

All outdoor activities, wine trails

Dec – Feb

Winter

Mountain snow

Snow on Troodos peaks — skiing is possible. Crisp, clear air and dramatic light. Fewer tourists means the trails belong entirely to you.

Mountain exploration, solitude

Before You Go

Water

Minimum 2L per person for half-day hikes. Cyprus sun is serious — more than you think.

Timing

Summer coastal hikes: start before 8 AM or after 4 PM. Midday heat can be dangerous.

Navigation

Download offline maps. Cell service is patchy in the wilderness. Tell someone your route.
